My name is Jason. I am married to a beautiful woman named Jennifer. I am a Christian. I believe in the power, truth, and glory of God. Like everyone I have had my troubles, and when I found no answers in other places, (alcohol for example) I finally turned to God, and the power of Jesus Christ as my savior. There is a question that I would like answered at the end of this, I promise. As a side note and a declaration of a miracle and the power of God and Prayer, my wife and I are expecting. We lost our first baby in September to a miscarriage. We got pregnant again in October. About 8 weeks later Jennifer started showing signs of miscarriage again. This time it came on worse and quicker than the last time. I won’t get into specifics for the younger readers this thread may have. But I will say that my wife was badly bleeding, and that’s not a good thing. Anyhow… We went to the Gynecologist that day. The Gynecologist said that my wife was in the process of having a miscarriage and she wanted her to have an ultrasound to see what was going on inside her. She told us that the ultrasound people would take us right away because of the emergency. We went upstairs to the ultrasound place and signed in. I sat and comforted my wife as I expected a short wait. As they called people in before us, (almost everyone in the waiting room to be exact, including people that came in after us who had an “appointment”) the wait was almost an hour and a half. Now at the risk of sounding corny, and I know when you talk about God you are never corny, and what I am about to say may sound cliché but, as I sit here in front of my computer I swear what I am going to declare is the truth. As I sat waiting with my wife I noticed a large blue Bible sitting on the table next to us. I stood up and walked to the table and picked it up and sat back down next to my wife. I said a brief prayer for guidance as what to do in our situation and for the Lord to speak to me thru the text of the Bible. I half expected to open the book to some inspirational Psalm about being strong and supportive or just something that made no sense at all to my current situation. (I actually started to well up and cry a little as I’m typing this) When I opened that great book, I don’t remember exactly what it said but it was to the effect of, if you prey in earnest and with all your heart you will be heard and answered. (I paraphrased that because like I said I don’t remember exactly what I read) As soon as I read that I began to prey. I preyed like I have never prayed before. I preyed for a good hour. But at the end of the prayer I said to the Lord that I trusted him, that I believed in him, and that no matter what happened, I would still love him and accept, and respect his decision. We were eventually called into the ultrasound room and my wife undressed. The ultrasound technician already knew the situation and was preparing us for the bad news, and documenting how long into the miscarriage my wife was. When the ultrasound started the technician was astounded what she saw. The look on her face spoke in volumes. She looked at my wife and said with puzzlement, “I don’t know what the doctor is talking about. Your baby is fine.” We saw the heart beat and everything. The Gynecologist was also astounded when we brought the news back to her. By the time we got home, my wife told me, after a brief trip to the bathroom that the bleeding had stopped. I never expected a miracle. I never expected my wife and child to be healed. All I wanted was the strength to support her, and help her thru another miscarriage. What I got was a miracle. Praise God, a miracle. We are due in September, and all is going well. Now, I digress. *trumpets sound* Now the question, the one you all have been waiting for. I am a police officer. I have often wondered if being a police officer is right with God. Often what we do is not good. Often what we do is not Christian. Often what we do is hypocritical. Often what we do is devoid of love and compassion for the person we peruse. I love my job. I’m good at my job. I believe I was “called” to do my job. But sometimes I question its alignment with God. I heard a saying once, and some of you may have heard it as well. “In the pursuit of wrongdoing we step away from God.” That struck a chord with me, and it made me doubt my position. I am looking for reassurance. “BUT” I would also like to hear the negative people who read this thread have to say about Christianity and Police work. Please help me to understand more clearly my position. Thank you all who read this, and thank you even more to those who respond. “Negative or not!” ~Jason

Jason: Welcome and praise God for His great mercy and compassion on you and your family. I'm sure you will never forget the goodness of God through this miracle. To answer your question, turn to Romans 13:1-7 (KJV) and you will note the following as pertains to policing ("peace officers"): v 1. -- Christians are commanded to be subject to the civil authorities placed over them. Civil authorities include police, and all those responsible for peace, order and good government. v. 1 -- It is God would delegates power or authority to them. v. 1 -- It is God who "ordains" or places in position those who are in authority. v. 2 -- Those who resist civil authorities resist the ordination of God and will be condemned for it. v. 3 -- Civil authorities and those delegated by them to maintain law and order are not a terror to those who are law-abiding, but they are to those who are not. v. 4 -- Civil authorities are "servants" of the Lord for good to those who are law-abiding. But those who are not should be afraid, because police do not bear "the sword" (firearms) in vain. The police and the criminal justice system are there as "the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil". v.5 -- Consequently, we must be subject to civil authority, not only because God's wrath will come upon us through the justice system, but also for conscience sake. v. 6. In view of this, we should pay all our dues to every authority -- the tax system, customs, the justice system, the police, and those who should to be honoured such as heads of state. As to how you execute your duties, that must be according to the direction of the Holy Spirit -- with justice, fairness, even-handedness, and humility. John the Baptist told the soldiers of his day "Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages" and he told the tax collectors "Exact no more than that which is appointed you" (Luke 3:13,14). At the same time, if God is calling you into a specific ministry so that you have no choice but to abandon policing, then that is another issue altogether.

Tit 3:1 Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, Rom 13:1 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Rom 13:2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. Rom 13:3 For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; Rom 13:4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 1Pe 2:13 Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 1Pe 2:14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. These are a few of the passages that show that God Himself has ordained civil authorities, including police officers. As far as police tactics being "unchristain" or "hypocritical" as you have said, let me give you another brief story from the pages of scripture. This past Sunday was the celebration of Purim, commemorating the events in the book of Esther. Queen Esther's cousin was named Mordecai, who had raised her as his own daughter. Mordy found out a plot to kill the king by a pair of the guards and it was thwarted. He did this by stealth. Later when Haman sought to kill Mordy and the rest of the Jews, Esther herself used stealth and feminine wiles to convince the King to come to a series of dinner parties where she eventually revealed Haman for what he was. Her tactics may appear to us today to be "unchristain" or "hypocritical" but scripture holds her and Mordy in high esteem. I would submit that your concerns run afoul of modern day intrepretation, not scripture itself.

The basic duty of a christian is to serve, to give, to help people, I would think a job as a police officer would be a good christian job. to serve and protect.

Agreed with all the above, Jason. A friend of mine (also a Christian, and a fellow writer like me) is a homicide detective for the Miami-Dade PD in Florida. Believe me, he knows he's called to police work. And he's very good at it. I'd say God has you right in His will. And blessings on you, you wife, and your unborn little one!

Ezra posted an excellent answer for you. I can only add, that if and when I need a police officer, I will be thanking God if the officer is a Christian. I would want you to be my police officer. I thank God that there are Christ followers who are police officers.

Hey Ironcobra, I heard an amazing testimony close to three years ago given by a man who is now working as a missionary in Jordan, but he received his real training as a police officer. His testimony is about all of it ... but he really talks a lot about his time as a police officer, where God really used him in a powerful way. As he puts it, "I learned about everything I know about sharing my faith as a police officer. (He then adds he had most of it erased when he went to seminary because they have this "formula" that is drilled into them at the one he attended. ) He adds, as a police officer he learned about how to handle people who hated his guts just because he was a police officer, and how to overcome that hatred in a way that really impacts their life. It is a funny, enlightening, very powerful ... and long (a little over an hour), but very worth your time if you have a chance to listen. You can find it here. Just hit the "listen now" button (or you can download it for a later time).

I believe you're asking a very important question. Jesus Christ called us to a life of non-violence. If you feel that you can fulfill that call and be a police officer, then by all means continue. Blessings!

I live in a town where most of the police officers are Christians. I am very thankful they are. God can use you where you are already planted. Just keep your statement of faith and use it on the job too. God bless you.

Often what we do is hypocritical. Often what we do is devoid of love and compassion for the person we peruse. I love my job. I’m good at my job. I believe I was “called” to do my job. But sometimes I question its alignment with God. Hi Jason and welcome to the boards. I am in law enforcement as a Corrections Officer at a county jail and am hoping to one day work in patrol. I am also a born-again Christian. What do you believe is not in alignment with God? I think it's very important that you work this out as you have other men and women in blue who need to know they can depend on you - even with their very lives. Have you actually written out the specifics you believe are in contradiction with your faith? Look at them. Are they requirements of your job, or are they things that officers easily slip into but can and should stop? (revenge, hatred, etc). Is it something unethical within your department but not the field of law enforcement? Is it really actually wrong and contrary to God's laws? If you think this last question may be a yes - study! study! study! Is it truly at odds with the Christian faith? There are some things that we assume are sin but because of tradition - not what Scripture actually says. So, what does Scripture say? Etc, etc, etc. I understand the temptations out there. But I also know that it is my decision to do my job with the upmost integrity and honor. Every single day when I head off to work, I pray a simple prayer: For God to keep me and my fellow officers safe and to help us do our jobs with skill, knowledge and wisdom. I then pray the most important part: That I would be a light in a very dark place. Working in law enforcement, you work with some of the darkest people out there. I know what it is to look evil in the eyes. It's a very hard job, but I wouldn't change it for the world. I know I am exactly where God wants me at this point in my life and I know that God has used me - and not just with the inmates. There are many officers out there who live in a dark place as well. I am blessed to attend a church that is extremely supportive of officers. I believe there are about 20 of us who attend - including one elder who is a deputy sheriff. When you know officers who are truly walking the walk, it is very evident that this is a field God wants believers! As far as "violence". My job can require me to use force. However, force is not the same thing as violence. I use force to protect and defend. I have never used it in anger or because I was just mad. And yes, I have had to use force (fortunately never lethal force, but I am prepared to go there if that is the only option). There is nothing in Scripture that is against this. In fact, we see throughout Scripture that there is a time and a place (read Ecclesiastes). Read what others have posted - especially Romans 13:4. This is a role that God has ordained and set in place! How can we call that contrary to God? Yes, it would be easy to slip into un-Christlike behavior in this field. I know the temptations all too well. But, that is not because the job doesn't line up with Christ. That is because, like all things out there, we humans are quite adept at screwing up what God intended for good. We humans excel at dirtying up even the most noble things. If our job doesn't line up with God - it's not the job that is the problem. It's us.

I hope God will richly bless you, your wife, and your child. Now, let me give my thoughts on your question. I have often thought of this myself. At least, it sometimes seems that way. I've thought, "How could it be right for the government to execute people who deserve it, but not right for a guy to fight, even kill, to protect his wife, girlfriend, family, etc.?" I've also thought things such as, "How could it be wrong in the New Testament, but not in the Old?" Et cetera. I'm honestly not sure what to think, but I am leaning more towards it being OK than not. I know without a shadow of a doubt that a woman being in such a role is wrong, but a man I am not so sure about it. Honestly, it's one of the few things I am unsure about. I'm not trying to be prideful, just honest. But this I do know completely. If you honestly want to know the truth - and I suppose I'm kind of speaking to myself here - God will show it to you. This is true on any issue. I don't care if it's about dress, men and women's roles, Calvinism vs. Calminianism, whatever. If you want to know, God will let you know. But you must want to know. You must want Him to, if you are wrong, to change you. And, if you're right, want Him to confirm it. Show you His Ways, His Laws, His Teachings. As men, we are supposed to be the protectors. And, I must admit, if the time came, I would kill to fulfill that God-given role. But... Well, I guess I've said enough. I've tried to be honest. Very much so. Looks like we both may have a journey to take. God bless.

I worked for a time as a 'special police officer' and therefore I was not a 'fully fledged' police person; however, I was still required to follow police procedures and the Law of the land. During this time, I did see things which I was not comfortable with, however, I chose not to participate in such. I had a brand new jacket stolen from within a police locker room where the general public have no access (so I'm sure you can work that one out)! I have worked amongst thieves, etc not only in the police service but in other professions also. Being a police officer does not make a person sinless. Everyone, including police officers, need the Lord because we are all guilty of sin. quote:

Being honest, I'm not sure what you mean by this... anything which I was required to do was in accordance with the Law which was not out of alignment with God. What do YOU have to do which you believe may not be in alignment with God? The police service in the UK does not require anything less than treating a criminal decently regardless of what they have done. The Court system stands to punish a person once a crime has been established and someone has been charged. Perhaps I have lost touch with it these days as it has been over 15 years since I served... however, I cannot see these principles having changed - only those who are supposed to follow them and if this is the case - it is individuals which are not abiding by rules set down for police personnel to follow which is at fault and not the job.

What an awesome testimony of miracle power! I know a little bit about how tense it can be in an ultrasound room, esp. if things are not going well or there is any issue at all whatsoever. I think God showed you great mercy here, and I hope that you and your wife and eventual child will forever praise Him for this thing that He has done, and also - this is somewhat humorous - when your child colors on the curtains with markers or ruins some decorative object in the house or whatnot someday, always keep in mind how miraculous this birth will be and go light on the little guy or girl! Not saying don't discipline of course, but I think you know what I am saying --- Now, about police work. I have never been a cop, but I truly respect those who do. I have read harrowing stories about how people have been adversely affected for their service for the community. In many cases it is a thankless job, and sometimes you must like Christ, face scorn and contempt from the very people you are trying to help an minister to. I am not sure what exactly is stirring in your heart and what things you have to do which are not "christian", I'll leave that between you and God, but I for one would like to say that I wish and pray that there would be more Christians in the police work, and I thank God that there are Christians in the police force. I thank God whenever I see a true follower of Christ in any public office, political, military or police work, because just like the entire nation of Egypt was blessed because of Joseph, and likewise the eventual nation of Israel, not to mention the entire nation of Egypt, false gods and all, I think that your unit and all your fellow officers will be blessed by your presence as a Godly man on the unit you work in.

I too often question the alignment police work with the commands of God. It is not the parts about civil authority or maintaining order that I question. It is the brutal punk attitudes I have seen from officers. I am very nearly convinced that fully one-third of cops on the force went into that line of work because they wanted to be "legitimate bullies." I grew up in a world where I was taught that "The policeman is our friend" and "He helps keep us safe." The reality that I have experienced is that both statements are full scale lies. I have had cops lie to my children. This terrorized them. The cops justified it in their own minds as "needing to get the truth." I will tell you Jason, if you ever knowing lie to a person to "get the truth" you not only won't get the truth, but you will damage your own soul so badly that you will no longer be able to know the truth when it is told to you. You will become suspicious of everyone because you damaged your self by telling lies. Proverbs 17:4 teaches that a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue. I was dumbfounded when I learned the cops were actually instructed and taught to lie to people—even children, during interrogations. The very fact that cops are taught to lie will make them incapable of being able to distinguish the difference between lies and truth. If cops think they can get to the truth by lying, they better know they will be judged by God according to Proverbs 21:6 "The acquisition of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death." Paul identifies hypocritical liars in 1 Tim 4:2. Their consciences are so seared that they believe they are doing GOOD by lying. But Proverbs says he who tells lies will perish. There won't be any sovereign immunity granted on the day they face God. Many, many times cops are committing BIGGER and MORE DANGEROUS crimes in God's eyes than the petty crimes they are investigating. Here is an example: If you smear and destroy an innocent person's reputation, God says that a man's good name is of MORE value than rubies. One little sentence that ruins an innocent person's reputation with a false accusation is a greater crime in God's eyes than jewel theft! Many police tactics pervert justice. That will not win the approval of God. The ends do not justify the means in the Lord's sight. If your conscience is bothering you, GOOD! As for me, I cannot trust anything that a cop says. I have heard them knowingly lie to judges. I have seen the reports they wrote with lies they fully knew were lies. I have heard them give false testimony under oath at depositions. The scriptures tells me that liars are bound for hell. I shall rejoice that God is just. Lying is not OK with God. If you are ever required to lie, or to cover up a fellow officer's lie, I pray you have the strength to honor God and refuse.

God does not pursue wrongdoing. He just sort of lets it pile up. Psalm 81:12 gave them over to a depraved mind Job 8:4 delivered them into the power of their transgression Acts 7:42 But God turned away and delivered them up Romans 1:24 God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity Romans 1:28 gave them over to a depraved mind See? No pursuit of wrongdoing on God's part. Proverbs 16:27 says "A worthless man digs up evil." And yes, that sounds like a step and a leap away from what God does. I think police officers ought to be pursuing truth. Only when a cop is pursuing the truth that will protect of the innocent is he acting like the Lord. Many people are falsely accused and are innocent of the devil's accusation.

I don't know where you live sen10tious, but many of the things you are describing are not only unethical but would result in being fired in my department and every department I know of. I'm not sure where your bitterness has come from, but that is not law enforcement. Of course, I do hear those accusations daily when I work and I've been the recipient of those accusations. All I can say is that I know my integrity and I know what I have done. I am also very thankful for cameras that prove my innocence. The folks I deal with are expert liars and even I am astonished at how convincing they can be. I probably would believe them too if I hadn't seen the facts first hand myself. Now, I just don't believe folks anymore - I check out everything. You see, when you spend 8 hours per day being lied to all day long, it affects you. And if you think I'm kidding, I would encourage you to spend a day following an officer around. You will be shocked by what you see - and it won't be in regards to the officer. You want to talk about being falsely accused? I can tell you firsthand what it feels like - and I can give you almost daily examples. In fact, part of my job is protecting myself FROM false accusations. I live under a microscope and every single thing I do is judged. And you know what? I'm ok with that because I live my life with integrity and have nothing to hide. I'm not going to say that everyone in this field is above reproach. I know there are bad apples. We just had 2 of our officers fired this last year for trying to set up a marijuana trafficking operation. I had a Chief of Police and his Captain lie to my face in a meeting concerning why they didn't hire me and I had the documentation to prove it. Their behavior was not a requirement of their job - in fact, it was done despite their job. THEY were the problem - not the profession. BUT! They are not your average officer. You average officer isn't perfect, but s/he works hard in stress that you cannot even begin to imagine. They take abuse on a daily basis and face false accusations made against them all the time. When you are training in this field, you are told that at some point in your career, you WILL be sued no matter how well you do your job. It's just a part of the job. Personally, I haven't been sued yet, but I've been threatened more than once and I know I did my job with integrity and honesty (and again - I am grateful for video cameras recording what I do). I have been called every name in the book and yet in my job I can't take it personally. I can have someone come in and literally threaten my life (yes, I am being entirely serious here!), and my job is to keep them safe and help them - and I do that job. And I do that job well. And then, despite me doing my job with integrity and honor, folks like you come along and spew blanket judgements against all those who do an impossible job with honor simply because of the badge they have pinned to their shirt and nothing more. I'll be honest: I get more respect from most of the inmates I watch over than I saw in your post. Why is that? You want to talk about false accusations? Go re-read your post.

Hold on just a second there. Me and that pervert would not get along well. I might would clobber him and enjoy it. But lying? Lying? Lying is never right. You cannot argue that. I don't care if there are examples in Scripture. Look up "lie, lying, liars, liar" etc. in a Bible program. You will quickly find God does not like lying or liars. When God said that all liars will be cast into the lake of fire, He didn't add a little note which said "unless they lied for a 'good' reason." There is no such thing as situational ethics. In Christ, Crushmaster.

So Rahab sinned? Scripture would disagree with you there: Hebrews 11:31 James 2:25

So what do you do with this passage? 1Ki 22:20 The LORD said, ‘Who shall entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth Gilead?’ One said one thing; and another said another. 1Ki 22:21 A spirit came out and stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will entice him.’ 1Ki 22:22 The LORD said to him, ‘How?’ He said, ‘I will go out and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ He said, ‘You will entice him, and will also prevail. Go out and do so.’

The profession of being a police officer is, indeed, a noble profession. I thank God for those ones who know Him and conduct themselves accordingly. But at the same time, I have found myself wondering about those times when police officers are forced to enforce laws or rules which violate their conscience. I, for the most part, see more of a corrupt nature in the court system than with law enforcement.
