A Christmas Carol (Disney) - LOVED IT!!! Thought the animation was great. Do agree with previous poster about it being a bit "dark", but loved how they were not ashamed to reference Christianity at times.

New Moon (Twilight Series) - HATED IT!!! Thought it was boring and dragged out. I love the books and the first movie, but this one I felt was a waste of money.

I think A Christmas Carol looks fantastic - but there's no WAY my kids would be able to watch that. Definitely too over the top for them. Can't wait to see it myself though!

Thrist - sort of the anti-Twilight. Not for those who have difficulty with r-rated material. Spoilers in invisitext, highlight to read: Priest volunteers for an experiment, becomes a vampire, tries to hold on to his humanity. Then he falls in love, and things begin to unravel. Eventually he turns his lover, and she becomes an amoral killer.

For those that have not seen "Thirst"--More spoilers than a Tokyo Drift road race!

Could you back it up next movie review, Stateofgrace?

I just changed most of it to white text, so that those who didn't want any spoilers could avoid them, and those who didn't mind could highlight it and read. So, you might want to remove my quote from your post, BelleWeather

La Buche!

A dysfunctional, French comedy/drama, concerning how a family with relationship issues are trying to cope with not only a recent passing in their family (it came about 4 days before Christmas!), but also with their personal affairs... somewhat literally! Though I like the idea of having Emmanuelle Beart and Charlotte Gainsbourg cast in the same movie, something about the greater dysfunctional film genre had me feeling more disillusioned with the genre itself, than the very holiday season it sought to mock.*
*I'm trying to move past my decade-long cynicism phase...

Blood & Bones (Chitohone)

Perhaps the only Japanese Academy Award-winning role Beat Takeshi has ever won--at least thus far, portraying what could be film history's most despicable father figure EVER... ...and the worst part of it all is that it's loosely based on a true story!
Synopsis: Korean immigrant settling down in Osaka spends the next 6 decades (circa WWII-1984)amassing his fortune--AND abusing his family beyond repairable damage, leaving him a needlessly tragic mess, losing not only his ill-gotten gains (he became a loan shark after the fall of his then-successful fishcake business), but also the only people who should have mattered to him the most.

It's a harrowing, if not depressing experience to watch, given Takeshi's protagonist NEVER shows his psychological reasons why he did the sort of reprehensible things portrayed in the film, such as... sorry, there's no nice way to sugar-coat it; raping his wife--AND blatantly parading his mistresses (the latter of which will be part of his extended, but distant/abused family)... From what I gathered, it's based on a famous novel (authored by the protagonist's son), the text of which I've yet to find, much less read in an English-translated version, BUT if you're in the iron-stomach mood to check out a gritty, fact-based period drama, this may be your thing...

"Broken Embraces"

Pedro Almodovar's paean to film noir, his personal film study on film making, the objects of affection and those who obsess.

Lush intrigues, passion, betrayal and Penelope Cruz.

To Live & Die In L.A.

I haven't seen this in ages, that was until I acquisition the film on DVD recently, and all I can say is that it definitely gave me a more mature insight than say, when I first saw this William Friedkin police procedural on TV (back in the late 80's). It took me a while until I was made aware of how the main character's vigilante ways makes him just as morally despicable as the very villain he was pursuing. I suppose it's Friedkin's more realistic take of what happens when a Dirty Harry-type, has to face the moral consequences of his loose cannon character...

How unfortunate for you.

"Me and Orson Welles"

A better than average Richard Linklater coming-of-age-brush-with-greatness movie. The ensemble cast and storytelling has been improved with the insightful script by Holly and Vince Palmo.

Art can be enlightening, inspiring and magical. The making of art is not so illuminating, as it is hard work and often disillusioning.

Christian McKay's Orson Welles is extraordinary--you believe you are seeing Welles stride the Mercury Theatre stage in "Julius Caesar." Zac Efron is surprisingly good as the neophyte.

Brothers: The movie was decent over-all, but the ending left you with too many unanswered questions. That part was annoying, but the rest of the movie was ok.

I saw Precious. I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand it was a story we haven't really seen on the screen before, and I'm glad it was told. But I knew and expected that much since the first time I saw the previews maybe 4 months ago.

I thought it was a good effort. But honestly I would have preferred if the script had been given to a more experienced director. I thought it was a good overview of a movie, but in different hands the story would maybe have been a little less sketchy. And there were editing problems, which had the effect of braking connections between points in the film, I think. For instance, the red scarf, I believe, was the gift from the lesbians. Not showing that made the 'one helping another' theme, lost. We missed the symbolic point of precious passing on the love she had received from another. That growth. That would have been a nice balance to how she picked up and passed on negative things from her mother, which was symbolized in how her voice and speech pattern changed into her mothers when she said 'I'm hungry'. I also think some of the fantasy segments were clumsy.

And I think Precious had one problem too many, Specifically it was her mother using her for masturbation, which almost send the film over into parody. Without that, and instead offering a deeper look at what was involved with everything else going on in her life, it would have been a more effective story. Effective in the sense that it wouldn't have had that final over-the-top vibe. Just the abuse from the father, the babies, the illiteracy, poverty, etc, would have made a truer story about a larger (ignored) segment of the population, instead of sending it completely over into the 'oddity' camp.

But still I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Almost 4. I give Mo'nique 4+.

Transformers (the first one) was on TV last night. DH had dragged me to the second one before I saw the first one. This one was a good deal funnier, and easier to watch. Not that the second was cringe-inducing; it's just that the fight scenes were hard to figure out--you couldn't tell which hunk of metal belonged to which robot.

A fun movie for a night when you feel like watching fluff. Could have done without the female lead being dressed like a tramp, but otherwise enjoyable.

Brothers- fantastic

I disagree with the previous poster about the ending, I thought it was fitting. Especially since the war is still going on, we can't know what happens in that story ultimately, because the real stories are still going on.

I just felt so hard for so many of the characters, especially the eldest daughter. I felt I could empathize with all of them, really believable characters.

One scene is a tad violent, not for the faint of heart, but a really quality film. Love it.

...and the bad news that no one wants to hear.

A very good movie with superior performances by Ben Foster, Woody Harrelson and Samantha Morton.

*semi-spoiler below* (If you don't want to know about the ending...go no further...lol)

I agree it was a good movie, but I couldn't figure out why the brother was still around at the end. Was he suppose to "be there" for the family cuz the husband was so out of it? And was the husband "ok" with that? Maybe I missed something but, I don't think people just snap out of post traumatic stress disorder quickly--so this situation could go on for a long time. Is the brother gonna be the "Dad" for all those years? And wouldn't that just make the situation worse since the kids already like the uncle more than they like their Dad?
That was the part that confused me. Plus, the obvious attraction from the brother to his sister-in-law. They didn't seem to resolve that. (How he's gonna be "Dad" yet keep his emotional distance from the wife.)
But, I agree it was a good movie. For an adult audience, I didn't think the violence was that graphic in my opinion (I've seen worse anyway).
This was a good movie though. I just wish they wouldn't of left so much stuff up in the air. Although, I did notice that the brother's switched roles. The "good" one goes bad and vise-versa. Maybe that was the whole point? If that's the case, they needed to go on a little longer to show if the new "bad" brother stayed that way.

"Nine"

The movie based on the stage musical based on the Italian play based on the classic Italian movie based on the dearth of inspiration suffered by Federico Fellini in the 1960's.

Rob Marshall's lingerie shop of horrors has a serious problem. For all the outstanding talent in the cast, there isn't one character to consider heroic or sympathetic.

On exiting the theatre, a friend said, "That wasn't anything to write home about..."
"Except to warn them," quipped another.

Do yourself a favor and rent Federico Fellini's "8 1/2" instead.

Will do! Something's been telling me that anything by Rob Marshall nowadays would/will equal sub-par-laughable, kitschy drivel, sort of like Memories of A Geisha, a.k.a, an Epcot/Disney view of WWII-era Asia! *
*kinda begs the question where's the Rape of Nanking, Unit 731, Bataan Death March amidst the love story--no differently than an Italy sans The Red Brigades/Aldo Moro, the Maxi trials, and oh yeah... Giulio Andreotti!
