JULIE! How wonderful! Go post deployment baby lol!

I'm glad the readjusting is going well. What a blessing that is.

Ok military wives....quick question for you....

It seems there is a very good chance that DH will be going back in to active duty with the Army after his deployment to Iraq. That means a move for the family. I know the military will pay for the relocation, but do they help at all with things like:

*selling our current home
*finding new housing
*can you bring pets onto base (base housing)

We have 2 cats and 1 dog. The dog is a lab/german shepherd mix. We would love to adopt another German Shepherd, but not sure how that could hurt us finding housing. That breed normally is not allowed in every day apartment complexes and such.

Selling your current home? Nope.... I'm 85% sure on this, so be sure and ask.

Finding New Housing: Yep ... you would need to contact the housing office at the base where you'll be PCSing to.

Pets: Probably, but checking with the base you'll be PCSing to. (My advice? Don't mention 3 pets, just ask about "pets".) And be sure and ask about breed restrictions for dogs... just refer to your current dog as a "lab mix".

The very best place to get advice on this? Go here: MILITARY FORUM (I post there as Mollymouser)

Selling: no. However, should you choose not to sell (or are unable to sell) they can help you find a local management company that will rent your home out for you.

Finding new housing: yes. What molly said.

Pets: some posts do have breed restrictions for on post housing. If you live off post, it's up to the individual landlord. If you end up going overseas, it gets sticky, as there are quarantines and such you will have to deal with.

In the '70s we were living in SC when my dad got stationed at Pearl Harbor. We got rid of all of our pets because they would have to be quarantined before they could live with us in HI. I think the quarantine was to be for 90 days. We got a Boxer while we were there. When my dad left the Navy and we moved to CA, we took our Boxer with us and she didn't have to be quarantined at all in CA.

If I'm not mistaken, that was because back then HI had very few - if any - cases of rabies and they wanted to make sure the pets were not rabid. Of course, that was 35 years ago and there may have been one or two changes since then.

HI still quarantines but you can get some exceptions for guide/aid dogs and by now they may take the pet passport thingy. I can't remember.

Europe is getting better and better about pets and using the Pet Passport thing is AWESOME.

Reviving this one.

I know Molly's wonderful hubby is coming home soon.

Mine is still gone for a few more months. I miss him.

BUT we did find out we are going back to Germany next!!!! (I know most of you already know that since I blogged about it a few weeks ago when we found out). We are going back to where we were stationed a few years ago...Baumholder. We already know the area, so that's good!!! The housing we are very familiar with, so at least we know what amenities are in which areas...and we WILL choose the housing with a laundry room, not the basement shared laundry. We just have to get there to find out where.....oh the waiting!!!!!!

BUT while he is gone I am trying to downsize EVERYTHING that isn't necessary!!! So far I have given away 16 bags of stuff...and I have 5 more waiting at the door to go to Goodwill this week. I am just waiting til I finish the two rooms I still have to go through top to bottom this coming week. Boy it's amazing how much junk you can acquire in just two years!!!!

I am also planning to replace some things (dishes and such) so those we will wait til we are there are get what we want since our stuff could be months behind us.

Yay for getting to go back to Germany, Sarah! Do you have a rough idea when you'd go to Germany?

Just 8 days until my wonderful DH comes home. Then he should be home for at least 6 months (except for a week or two here-and-there, of course) ... before either heading back to Iraq (deployment #7) or back to Florida... but he doesn't think Florida is very likely.

The general dates we have now are these:
His 12 months is up 18 July. But he is hoping to put in for 30 days of leave at the end, so he may be home 18 June or so.
His report date in Germany is on or before 10 September. His orders state that if we sell the house fast and can leave sooner, then we can report there anytime between July and his September date.

Ok, call me selfish....but I'm REALLY getting tired of people giving Ray so much pity about being gone and away from Derrek for a year. I just wanna say....THIS WON'T BE A PICNIC FOR ME EITHER! I get some "poor sharon....poor poor sharon......all alone with a baby while her poor husband is so far away and in a war zone. So how's the weather?"

UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok....that felt good. Does not make the situation better....but there really isn't anything that will.

Welcome to my world. You know what I hear all the time? "Well, since you two don't have children, it shouldn't be any big deal to be apart for months and months."

The more I get into this, the more I realize that it really is just not something people can fully understand unles they are there or have been there. And it is a lifestyle of constant adjustments. Not just preparing for the deployment or the time apart, then the actual time apart, and there there is just as big of an adjustment when he/she comes home. While, in the back of your mind, just waiting for the news that your soldier is going to leave again.

I am sorry. No it doesn't make the situation any better. Neither of you chose to have this happen, and just because he will be in a war zone doesn't mean he is any better then you for facing this head on.

The next 3 months are going to drag by....they already are seeming to "slow down". I am so over being here in OK, esp since I have no real reason to be here other then this house. Soooooo....now it looks like I will have to get it ready to and sell it on my own without Paul. Considering the physical limitations I have because of my hands, I don't think that is going to happen.

Just got home from a Yellow Ribbon Pre-Mob Briefing. Lots of good info but boy is my brain fried!

Derrek is gonna be 7ish months when Ray leaves. He will probably be three months short of 2 years when he gets home. A lot of the kids stuff that is offered are for school aged kids. Any suggestions on stuff that may be of use to him at his age while Ray is deployed?

Oh, and Derrek still fit in his bouncer this morning. He took a short nap when we got home, and I put him in his bouncer. He does not fit it anymore. Sheesh! Oh yeah, and last night his size 1-2 diapers fit. Today? Not so much. I suppose I'll donate the remaining diapers to the local food pantry. They take toiletries and such too.

Sharon,

Ray could read books onto tape for Derek to listen to. If you have the books Derek can look along with listening to the tapes. You could use library books and make color copies if the books are out of print. Have a variety of books some for soon and some for later.

Have a picture of Ray that you can put in a plastic frame and put near the crib.

Peace,
Anne

Make sure Ray understands that Derrick's version of Daddy will be vastly different when he comes home. It will take some getting used to for him to get back to realizing Daddy is a real living human being.

Keep Ray in your lives as much as possible. Let him talk to Derrick on the phone, keep pics around and let Derrick look at and play with them all the time, let Derrick "help" pack boxes for Daddy, etc. You keep him "alive" for Derrick by continuing to keep him in your lives as much as possible.

Some families I know have done the Flat Daddy idea. We haven't, but it is interesting.

Paul gave each of our kids a special teddy bear before he left. So they had something to hug when they missed him. The Build-A Bear Workshop has those devices that you can record your own message onto and place into an animal, so maybe that would be a good thing to keep his voice near and dear to Derrick.

I did the unthinkable today....I cried in front of Derrek. It looked like his little heart was breaking. Which of course made me cry more. Than that little bugger tried to make me laugh I think.

Anyway.....tomorrow morning we say our goodbyes. Then, baby permitting, I plan to come home and sleep.

Thinking of you today, Sharon.

Because I've been in your shoes. And it stinks. But know this ... you aren't alone; we're here for you, supporting, encouraging and praying. And your wonderful DH? He's in God's hands.

It will be OK.

Really, the separation between Ray and Derrek upsets me more than the separation between us. Watching all those kids say goodbye to their parents today just broke my heart. Watching Ray weep over Derrek broke whatever was left.

I feel like I have been hit with a lead pipe. I suppose I may be dehydrated from all the crying. I'm gonna go drink some water and try to sleep. I hope we can make church tomorrow but I'm not going to push it if I wake up feeling the same.
