I just found out about a new computer virus that can attack your computer if you press the F1 key. This can occur in some of the earlier versions of Windows, including Windows XP Service Packs 2 and 3. This information has been CONFIRMED:

I saw a link somewhere where you can find out how to remove the Windows Help program from your computer. I'll see if I can locate it.

According to Snopes it's only active in IE. So do what you should have done long ago, download Firefox and uninstall IE. Problem solved and your surfing more securely.

Well, I have both Firefox and IE7. I don't use the F1 key anyway. Windows Update comes in on IE. Will it work on FF as well?

Yep. I uninstalled IE when I got this computer and I'm still getting updates.

If you are using XP - you can disable IE but I do not think that you can install it. The updates that you are getting will be the critical ones. I don't think that you will see optional video/printer/network updates unless you use the manual IE method for checking for updates... but I could be wrong. I've never disabled IE within XP.
I think that Vista is the first Windows OS to separate the update process from IE.
I use both IE and Firefox because there are things that IE will do that Firefox will not do - or I've never figured out how to make Firefox do them.

How do you uninstall IE when it is an intergrated part of the Windows OS?

Okay, uncabeeil - you've got me talking to myself (well, at least quoting my own post :-)
When I made the post above, I was working on a hosed XP system for a friend and and kept nodding off during the chkdsk... so, I opted to read thru the forums. What I should have done was: fire up an XP Virtual PC and attempt to "uninstall" IE via the add/remove Windows Components (or whatever it is called) dialog box. Doing that only removes the shortcuts pointing to IE. But here is an article on how to "safely" (in the author's opinion) disable IE. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/browsers/f/removeiexp.htm
I thought that IE could be removed from Vista - but my Vista Business Virtual PC that does not seem to be the case. I stand corrected (actually, I'm lying down :-)
It does seem to be possible to remove IE from the Windows 7 OS.
Please note that my first post was not picking at your use of the term uninstall - it was just the ramblings of a tired old man.

Let me correct myself, I uninstalled IE after updating to Windows 7. I did it through the control panel like I would for any other unwanted program. Maybe it's still there but hidden?

Browsing a compromised web site (using Internet Explorer, or any browser that uses the IE rendering engine), then opening the help feature in Windows.

So you get this just from browsing with IE on Windows. Note it does not affect Windows Vista and on and it does not affect Server 2008 editions.
So if you are surfing with IE on XP then yes, you are at risk.

In other words, if you don't use the Windows help files while using IE in XP, then you're okay, right?
