You all have heard the case of the ten Russian spies, who were living as everyday folks.

It blows me away and makes me wonder how many other nations or how many more such spies might exist in our country. I'm not trying to reinvent McCarthyism, I'm just wondering.

The details of this Russian case seem more like an episode of Get Smart than a true spy case. What if they mistakenly thought that someone over here was connected or influential? Might that cable guy who keeps telling you to turn the babysitter off be a everyday Russian spy trying to infiltrate your life?

You know America has become a largely transient society and I think this makes it possible for many people to be surveillenced without their knowledge.

Still I am wondering what the purpose of paying spies to look like average American citizens could be.

Any thoughts?

And how many American spies do you think are living as ordinary people in Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, and dozens of other countries around the world?

There really is no mystery to this at all. Governments use spies to gather information about the covert activities of other governments. The US had, by far, the largest military industrial complex in the world, and thus is top of the list of concerns of any nation who is not a stanch ally (and even some who are, no doubt).

Just because you might not believe that the USA deserves to be spied on in doesn't mean that other nations think that way (and given some of our past actions and interferences, they have every right to be suspicious).

What do you mean "what sort of activities?" Are you being deliberately coy?

Agents of foreign powers are doing what they always do -- gathering intelligence on the disposition of forces, contingency plans, battle plans, strategic plans and policies, weapons systems, counter-intelligence, intelligence agencies, and so on.

No doubt in the case of the Russian spies they were still establishing their cover, blending into American society until they could get close to someone with information of use to the Russian government. Obviously they we're very good at it since they were caught.

But this is all very obvious stuff that the Russians have been doing for decades. Why do you find it puzzling or sinister? Spy rings exist in just about every country on the planet.

Human Intelligence (HumInt) is about developing and working contacts to get information that other sources are unable to provide. Information from highly secured areas with no electronics emissions. But even better is to know how the leaders think and react. If you are trying to read your opponent, there is no other way to get inside their mind. Develop a contact that is close to the person you are trying to understand or read. Usually spies run contacts of nationals in the the country they are assigned.

It's probably your boss. He was bought off by the French, who got their money from the Germans, who were paid by the Russians. Not to mention the Computer exec who was paid by the Chinese who made a deal with Iran who made a deal the Saudis. Oh mY!!!! This is bigger than I thought!! We're doomed! And now we know the Mexican cartels were actually assisted by the CIA and Cuba!!
