I've been a Mac user for over a decade. It's time to upgrade but because of a job I may take, we need two computers. One for me and one for my wife who is in college. I've had bad thoughts-I've been thinking about going to...to...a PC. There, I said it.

The main issue is cost. I do a lot of work with photography and would like a 17" screen. The MacPro is too expensive with a 17''.

Who out here can help me decide which PC to get? I'm not looking for a lot of stuff. Just a good lap top with a large hard drive for my music and pics. I would also like a web cam since I will be on the road a lot and it would be nice to see my wife and daughter.

I looked at Bestbuy today but have have too big of selection. Yikes!

Any takers on helping me out?

I'll make it easy for you since I only have one suggestion. :-)

I ferreted this out for some friends and they like it:
http://www.buy.com/prod/satpro-ez1702-c2d-2-2-4gb-320gb-dvdr-17-3-1y-xp-w7/q/loc/101/212646991.html

You get $30 off is you buy it w/ their VISA.
You get another $10 off if you are a first time buyer to buy.com.
I would not wait too long to order it - it has gone up in price since I suggested it to my friends.

They wanted 10 key and I wanted them to have W7 professional or higher so that they could download the free XP virtual machine. You should be able to run anything that way. The hard drive is not that big, but those are easy to swap out or just use an external USB one.

The CPU in this laptop was released 3rd quarter of 2009... so it is a relatively new one (which is rare for Toshiba - they usually offer older CPUs) This CPU is middle of the road - you could pay/get more, you could pay/get less computing power.

It has a TDP (<Google it) of 35 watts (as opposed to 10 watts for the ultra low power CPUs)... this means that you can expect a battery life of 3 to 4 hours at best... but I did not find a review that estimated that.

There's a wide variation in keyboard feel from one manufacturer to the next and even from one model to the next. It's all about personal preference. Some keyboards feel incredibly cheap even though in actual use I've seen them last well past the half life of dirt. Some folks like those cheap-feeling light-touch keyboards because they can fly on them. Some folks like the more deliberate-feeling keyboards for accuracy. Everyone's different. I guess what I'm trying to say is make sure you're ordering something with a keyboard you're already sure you'll be happy with.

I'd pay attention to screen resolution as well as to physical size. High resolution is of the reasons that the Mac Pro 17" is as expensive as it is. The 17" screen on the Mac Pro is 1920x1200, while some 17" laptops are only 1440 x 900. That's only a little more than half the number of pixels, which is a lot less space to work in.

How true; and some of us old folks hope that 1440 x 900 stays around in a 17" :-)

@OP,
The model I mentioned is:
17.3” diagonal widescreen TruBrite® TFT LCD display at 1600x900 native resolution (HD+)

See this PDF for the more specs:
http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/product/pdf_files/detailed_specs/satellite_pro_L550-EZ1702.pdf

BTW, the price dropped a tiny bit since my last post :-)

What you should really hope for is a progression to truly resolution independent Operating Systems. So that a screen with higher pixels per inch can provide the benefits of smoother, easier to read, fonts and graphics, without making UI elements and default sized fonts too small to use/read.

But, in the meantime, higher resolution remains a double-edged sword.

Or for His return - whichever comes first :-)

If you want to stay Mac you might consider a 13" Macbook Pro and then add an external display. Would be only a little more than half the cost of the 17".

Or just get an iMac and not a laptop.

Yeah, if you don't need a laptop, that's the ticket.

Yep, I'd say get the 13" MacBook Pro and an external monitor. Or even a regular MacBook and an external monitor. Is there a reason why you'd need the Pro other than the 17" screen? Larger laptops are more difficult to lug around...I'd rather have one of my kids' 13" MacBooks than my 15" Sony Viao.

Good idea about the monitor. I have an imac but it's about ten years old.

Actually, your cost of the right monitor will be almost the same, no matter if it is a Mac or PC.

You said you do photography. So do I. I presume you also do some post processing. Most 'inexpensive' displays are unable to produce the right images.

Something like the Eizo ColorEdge or FlaxScan series, NEC 2xxxx series, or others. You will drop $$$ if you want something worthwhile for photography, and probably will want dual monitors.

Of course you can go the cheaper route, but be ready to be printing proofs often.

If the monitor has DVI, then it matters not if it is PC or Mac.

What you save in money up front by getting a PC, you'll pay for for the rest of the machine's ownership:

  • Constant security vulnerabilities (IE, Flash, Images, etc.)
  • Less friendly user interface
  • Viruses & other malware

Being a commodity and 90% of the market has it's disadvantages.
