Does anyone here belong to a knitting group? Do you have one at your church? Do you use any of the knitting Bible studies that are available?

I don't know of any local knitting groups, but am not sure I would enjoy going to one as they usually have people all working on the same project. I just like the idea of a group of us sitting together knitting and chatting.

Used to have one in my home. Most of us were knitting strips that could be sewn together to make blankets for homeless or underpriviledged people. Others brought along any other projects they were working on. Maybe you could start one if there isn't one nearby.

Tried to establish one at my church--included all "needle work" type stuff, and offered to teach anyone who was interested but didn't know how. Lots of people expressed an interest. One person came once. Finally gave up.

We have a knitting & crochet group at the library where I work. People work on their own projects, but the more advanced people help the less experienced people work on new stitiches, etc.

Judith, that's a great idea. Good for outreach too.

What a shame about your group creationtalk. I wonder why so many expressed interest, then didn't show up? Have you tried making up a flyer and advertising in your local area? That way you might be able to meet some of your neighbours.

My friend and I get together sometimes and knit or practice our crochet in Starbucks.

I think the groups are most successful are those with a specific purpose for their work, such as using their work for ministries. One of the ladies at our church tried over and over to get a general quilting group going and it never worked. There were lots of women who quilt in our church, but not many who were really interested in taking their work out of their home. Then she felt God leading her to begin a ministry of making quilts for foster kids being removed from their home, and people were very interested in helping. They also make quilts every year for a summer camp our church sponsors for abused children. They've been going strong for about 5 or 6 years now with about 20 or so members. They even pray over the quilts as they sew them, which I think is pretty neat.

My church has a quilt group like that. They make lap quilts for seniors in nursing homes. The funny thing is, many of the women who make them are probably as old or older than the recipients. Every once in a while the latest production of quilts is brought into the sanctury to be dedicated during Sunday services.

I may have to do that, Cherish. A friend at church is intrigued by my phone covers and wants to arrange for me to come to her house some day to show her and another friend how to do the pattern. Who knows, if it ever happens, that might turn into a group?

You just never know. Maybe hand out invitations to people you think might be interested?

That was what I tried to do. The plan was to make things for various ministries--like make things for the volunteer group that is building our church (I've been making things for 15-30 people several times a year--wanted it to be a "church" thing, not a "me" thing), make things for soldiers, for premies, for people who have lost loved ones--police officers, firemen, soldiers, etc., for people who have lost everything due to natural disasters, etc. I think that demographics and the size of the church makes a big difference in the success of a group like this. My church is fairly small, most of us work, we live widely spread out...all of this makes it difficult for anything to come together.

Sounds like you need to look outside of the church to get numbers too then, if you only have a small church. Maybe make flyers to invite people in your local community?

Have you talked to the heads of the organisations of those groups you are trying to reach? They may already have a group running, and you could join them.
