I need a digital camera. (Well, I guess I dont NEED one)lol.
Anyways, I would LOVE a digital SLR, but I dont think it's a good idea to spend all that money on one since it is just for play.
Any suggestions for a quality cheaper version of a camera out there?

We have 3 digital cameras in this house. Two Sony's and one Kodak. If you just want a simple point and shoot I'd tell you to go with the latest Sony Cybershot.

Personally I want this one. But right now it's WAY out of my budget.

Blessings,

Garsy

i have a fuji s5100. had for about 4 years or so. it's been discontinued and been replaced by something with more megapixels. my first digital camera was a fuji. had it for a few years before it too was replaced by something better...the s5100. i mainly use it on vacations, which i don't take often, and on those occasions when i need a digital picture. it has everything i need, easy to work. i can't comment on the price because i got mine from a camera showroom when i was living in new york city. i was able to get it for a whole lot less than normal retail.

when it comes to buying a camera, if you're able to go to a showroom store, you will definitely get a great price. the one i went to also spent a lot of time with me to make sure i got the camera i wanted. and they wre knowledgable about cameras and could answer all of my questions. i was not rushed and did not have to hunt down a sales person.

What are you willing to spend on your 'good' camera and what kind of pictures do you take? Do you want to play with lenses?
DSLR's may be too much for you to play with. On the other hand, there are some really great cameras out there that have a built
in lens, take very decent photos, offer a considerable amount of options and are dependable and work in a variety of settings.

Do you want action or sports photos? Landscapes? Family pics? Low light? etc etc

Your answers will tell you what kind of camera would be a good choice for YOU personally.

BTW, the best prices are ONLINE, not in stores...you just have to make sure the warranty is in the US and not some foreign faraway land that you never heard of.

Every single camera out there has multiple writeups about it online....all cameras come with manuals....you can find very definitve instructions for your camera online that surpass the manual that comes with. You can join a photo sharing site online and learn and have fun.

My best advice: do alot of reasearch, but answer the questions re what KIND of photos you want to take...that will automatically limit your choices and I would never buy a camera because someone else liked it.

I hope to order a variation of this camera:

canon powershot on amazon

It's a point and shoot but it has a viewfinder and an lcd. You'll find the other cameras only have an lcd and if it breaks then you need to end up replacing the camera.

I had a previous model and it was great.

Because the camera I am going to suggest is SO outside of most people's comfort level in terms of brand name, I feel compelled to let you know that it is not my primary camera.

I've owned 2 Olympus DSLR cameras and 3 Canon DSLR cameras. My latest is the Canon 21mpx Canon 5D MK II with several f2.8L zoom lenses. You would think I would prefer a Canon, Nikon or Olympus digital point and shoot camera. But, I don't.

I prefer a point and shoot camera made by a company better known for calculators... Casio.

One of the best camera values of all time was the Casio Z750 camera. But, more recently, my 'best value' in a digital camera, at around $250, is the high speed Casio EX-FC100 which has some very unique features. First it is capable of shooting slow motion video, capturing a golf swing or a bird taking off in flight. Secondly, it has a remarkable pre-shoot feature that starts recording images BEFORE the final shutter press. No more missed photos of quick children.

Finally, the color and clarity is excellent for a small camera. The only drawback is one common to all small point and shoot cameras and that is the tiny flash.

Would anybody actually buy a film SLR camera now? I have a newer one, maybe if someone wanted it, it could offset the cost of a digital.
That casio sounds like something worth looking into especially since the 'color and clarity' is good. Somethings really do make a difference in pictures.
I bought a sony digital non slr seveal years back, but turns out to not be something I was looking for. So my husband carries it and he doesnt care that it is pink.

There is still a small market for film cameras you might be able to sell it.

I recommend canon and panasonic for point and shoots.

Poster above asked some questions about the photos you will be taking, that really would help to steer you.

there are people who will buy film cameras. if you're good with ebay, you will easily find a buyer there. i no longer have a film camera but at times i want one just to have one.

Depends on the camera and what kind of shape it's in. If it's a fairly high end one like my Nikon N80 then you might be able to get a few bucks for it. If it's a low end one you might as well pack it away in your attic.

Minolta in excellent condition. Has a 300 zoom attachment, too. That camera takes great pictures. (I had at least something to do with it too of course), but the way they turned out were of good quality. I love it really, but it seems so useless in this day and age now.

Always have at least one backup. A good rule to remember is the more complicated something is the more likely it is to break. Usually when you least want it to.
